Vancouver steps up its game to become greenest city

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The City of Vancouver is now stepping up its own game to become the greenest in the world by 2020 by working to centralize a recycling program within its own buildings.

It was recently discovered that recycling methods at many departments were different, not streamlined.

“For all of our city facilities, we had a different type of recycling system,” explains the City’s Sandhu Johnston. “Now we’re bringing into our largest waste generating facilities a common system for recycling.”

The first step is recycling at the downtown Vancouver Library.

“We’re going for the ones that either have the most visitors or generate the most waste,” adds Johnston. “It’s starts September 17th in the Central Library and then we’ll roll out to City Hall and the VPD headquarters and other facilities over the next couple of months.”

Vancouver has also identified 35 buildings that generate the most waste and therefore need the most work.
