VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Not every kid has a computer at home.  That’s why Rogers Media is launching new technology centres at Boys and Girls Clubs across Canada to help kids advance their computer skills. The centres are made possible all thanks to the Rogers Youth Fund.

It’ll help keep kids like Avy, at the Kimount Club, busy after school.

“It means I get to do my homework with my friends and stuff because usually I do homework at home, and then I don’t have access to a computer at home most of the time,” says Avy. “I use it to connect with people that I haven’t seen in years.  That’s why I use facebook to talk to the people I meet at Summer Camp.”

Jason Lee with the Boys and Girls Club says many families don’t have computers or don’t have parents that can teach them how to use them.

“Not all kids have access to someone who can work through technology with them, sometimes it’s trial and error, and with dedicated staff who can work with them they can get that resourcing and mentoring,” explains Lee. “We want to give all young people access to that information that we know they want to be using, that they need for their school work.”

Another centre is expected to open at the Fraserview Boys and Girls Club in South Vancouver later this year.
