VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Occupy Vancouver protestors rally to mark one year anniversary of the Occupy movement. A crowd of 100 people gathered to speak out against Ottawa’s policies and pipelines.
You didn’t see the large crowd of thousands like you did at the Art Gallery last October but the message was very similar. People gathered holding flags and signs saying things like “Stop Harper” and “No Pipelines.”
Organizer Sasha Wiley-Shaw says people want to see positive changes from Ottawa to promote equality.
“{We are here today to stop} Harper’s policies that serve the one percent in terms of privatized prisons that put money in corporate hands, Harper’s policy of pipelines in terms of destroying beautiful British Columbia,” says Wiley-Shaw.
“We don’t want these Harper policies in British Columbia and [we will] continue to put the pieces together in terms of policies here in Canada and the global economic system and the problems with it.”
Steven joined the group and calling a stop to the Enbridge pipeline proposal because he’s worried about the environment.
“It just seems ludicrous to me that the planet is facing this global warming crisis yet, we’re continuing to do the things that are causing it, it just doesn’t make sense to me,” says Steven.
Another man says he’s sick of being unhappy while corporations reap in all of the benefits.
“I’m here for injustice, for everything that is wrong and no matter what you say or do, things still go around and nothing changes,” says one man.
Protestors started the rally outside of the federal government offices on West Georgia and Hamilton streets.
The group marched through downtown disrupting traffic and making pit stops at the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Enbridge offices on Burrard Street.
Along the route people wrote messages on the ground in coloured chalk, scribbling things like “Save our Earth” and “Change Harper’s policies.”
