Father wants answers four years after daughter’s murder

MISSION (NEWS1130) – A father is still looking for answers four years after his daughter and her boyfriend were killed in Mission.

On September 18, 2008 Lisa Dudley and her boyfriend Guthrie McKay were shot in their home.

A neighbour heard gunshots and called 9-1-1, but the officer who was dispatched didn’t bother to get out his car to investigate.

McKay died right away, but Dudley was still alive when police finally found her. Her dry blood left her stuck to her chair.

Dudley’s father Mark Surakka has been calling for a coroners’ inquest ever since.

“The latest correspondence was the chief coroner told us there was an ongoing investigation and there won’t be an inquest date given yet,” Surakka says. “We want to know the content of that and what is the new information they found out. What grieves us is this is not a timely manner in which an inquest should come forward in. It should — by its own policy — come forward in a year.”

Surakka is concerned with every day that passes, witnesses will remember less about the case. He fears that will have a negative impact on the coroners inquest, whenever it happens.

In the meantime, he still has to cope with the loss of his daughter.

“There is no resolve yet,” Surakka says. “There are multiple problems inherent in this case and they haven’t been resolved although one person is in [prison], one person is on bail and the other is in jail for other crimes and it will be a year before there will be a trial for them.”

Jack Woodruff pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

Justin MacKinnon and Bruce Main have also each been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and are awaiting trial.

It’s not clear if Woodruff will testify against them.

The Mountie who stayed in his car was disciplined and docked a day’s pay.
