Vancouver city council votes in favour of shark fin soup ban

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver city council has voted unanimously in favour of a region-wide ban on shark fin soup.

The city now wants to work with other municipalities to draft a uniform bylaw for all communities in Metro Vancouver.

Anti-animal cruelty groups say more than 70 million sharks are killed each year through the practice of finning, which involves cutting off shark fins and tossing the sharks back into the water to die.

The city hopes to have a bylaw to vote on within a year.
