VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – BC’s Independent MLAs are teaming up and taking to Twitter.

Usually an independent works alone, but Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington says social media will allow herself and Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson to better connect with the province, especially now that the Liberals have cancelled their fall sitting at the legislature.

“It’s a good, modern way of providing one area of outreach. It enables people to engage in the dialogue immediately,” Huntington explains. “We do believe MLA’s should be free to voice the concerns of their constituents.”

They’ll begin what they call a “Twitter Town Hall” tomorrow using the hashtag #bcdemreform.

“The whole process is upside down. Members that belong to parties can’t speak their mind, they are giving speaking notes on legislative initiatives. They can’t ask questions, they have to vote the party line. The whole aspect of democratic involvement of elected representative that should be the voice of the people is just collapsing,” Huntington adds.

The Twitter town hall will begin at 12 p.m.
