SURREY (NEWS1130) – A controversial roadside display has gone up in Surrey that is bound to generate debate. Its creators hope it will get you thinking about abortion.
The so-called “roadside memorial” is made up of 100 blue and pink crosses in a haywagon at the corner of Fraser Highway and 188th Street.
Claiming 300 fetuses are aborted in Canada every day, Mike Schouten with WeNeedALaw.ca says it offers passers-by a chance to reflect.
“We thought it very prudent to put up a memorial,” explains Schouten. He’s now trying to gather support to bring in tough new anti-abortion laws.
“The campaign has, as its mission, to restrict abortion to the greatest extent possible,” he says. “As many of your listeners are aware, politics is the art of the possible.”
Schouten tells us he’s heard mostly positive reaction, but admits the display is not going to sit well with everybody.
He says Canada is the only democratic country in the world ‘without legal protections for children in the womb.’
