Stanley Park business beefs up security after two arsons

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – One business is ramping up its own security after two arsons in Stanley Park Monday night.

The recent fires are upsetting and scary for everyone says Jeannette Gallant, manager of the Brockton Cricket Clubhouse. Although she’s relieved to hear park rangers will be doing more foot patrols, she’ll be doing her own part.

“I’m going to try to keep some lights on because at this end of the park, we’re not here all the time and it can be quite dark,” Gallant explains. “So [we’ll be] leaving some lights on at night and just keeping an eye out for any suspicious activities.”

She’s worried she’d be out of a job if it were to happen to her property.

“This is people’s livelihood. There’s already a bunch of people that are just jogging around the park that don’t even have a bathroom to use now,” Gallant adds.

“People work and live here. There’s even a guy who lives in the park, that lives in a little house across the way here. It’s scary for all of us. It’s just wrong.”

For now, the park board says there are no plans for security cameras or added lighting. The board is also holding an emergency meeting Thursday at noon to talk about ramped up safety measures.
