VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Would you consider yourself a tax cheat? How far would you go to avoid paying sales tax?
A new study suggests most of us are just fine with paying for something under the table.
Fifty-five per cent would pay cash to dodge that tax. An H&R Block survey has also found we don’t feel at all guilty about it; only 30 per cent even thought this kind of tax avoidance was wrong.
Our street-level research jives with that.
“I’m definitely one of those people,” admits one man we met. “I do things for trade… so, that bypasses the taxman. But it’s a very small portion of the yearly total.”
“They get their share. I think we pay enough. We are heavily taxied. I’m sure I’m not the only one!” he adds.
“It’s done every day. Sometimes, if you can get a deal, you can get a deal. I mean, I understand how taxes work, and we need that, and I gladly pay taxes. But sometimes, you just get a deal,” says another man.
The majority of people asked in the survey also say they shouldn’t have report to barters or trades and servers shouldn’t have to pay taxes on tips.
