CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – A terrible kitchen accident in Chilliwack has left an eleven-month-old girl with second degree burns all over her face and body.
Her first birthday is coming up, and as it stands now, Avarie Edwards has a one-in-three chance of spending that special day in hospital, as she recovers from pulling a crock-pot full of stew onto herself last week.
The crock-pot was on the kitchen counter, and after being moved, it looks the cord that was tucked away came loose.
Avarie managed to get a hold of it.
Mom Tia says she rushed her baby to the hospital, but was transferred to the ICU unit at Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.
After being released a few days later, it was determined that Avarie would have to return to Children’s every three days for burn baths and dressing changes.
As Tia says she is not one to ask for help, one of her friends posted a facebook page rallying support for the first-time mom, and the community answered.
The 21-year-old mom says she is overwhelmed.
“I think everything that everybody has helped me with so far is amazing, and everything left that is left over, or any money that isn’t spent to help us, is all going toward Children’s Hospital and buying a bunch of toys and donating them.”
A friend has organized a fundraiser for the family, which will include a silent auction, at the Jolly Miller Pub on Oct. 5.
