LANGLEY (NEWS1130) – There will be no leadership review for the BC Conservative Party.

More than 70 per cent of members voted against a review of party leader John Cummins at Saturday’s Annual General Meeting.

Change versus status quo was the theme of Cummins’ address to the BC Conservative delegates.

He says people have had enough of the Liberals and don’t trust the NDP, and the Conservatives need to be ready to form the next government.

He says he doesn’t agree with critics who say he’s being too ambitious. “Basically we should settle at least for official opposition or maybe just a handful of seats in the legislature, but I don’t think that and I know that you don’t either.”

Cummins criticized spending practices of the government, highlighting high salaries for ICBC executives, and poor bookkeeping in the legislature

He says his party will have greater scrutiny when it comes to spending.

A group calling itself Friends of the BC Conservative Party, led by current party vice-president Ben Besler, wanted members to vote for a leadership review.

Besler had raised concerns through emails about Cummins’ leadership style.

Meanwhile, a group backing Cummins called the “A-Team” also emerged. It was led by North Cowichan councillor Al Siebring, who was elected the party’s new president.

The meeting got off to a rocky start, after long-time party stalwart John Martin jumped over to the BC Liberals on Friday.
