SURREY (NEWS1130) – Drivers can expect major slowdowns all weekend on Highway 1 thanks to the Port Mann Bridge project.

As News1130 has been telling you all week, there are significant closures on the Cape Horn Interchange and Highway 1.

Highway 1 westbound is down to one lane at the Cape Horn Interchange until last this afternoon.

Also, access to Highway 1 eastbound from Lougheed Highway westbound via the Cape Horn Interchange is closed. If you’re on Lougheed Highway and need to access Highway 1 eastbound, you have to use the Brunette Avenue interchange.

The project’s Max Logan says they’ve put a lot of planning into these changes.

“Our engineers have worked really hard to find a solution that allows the work to take place in the shortest amount of time possible and still allow at least one lane in each direction to get through,” he explains.

Logan adds they wanted to avoid closing the highway entirely.

‘What we’ve seen in other jurisdictions — like California and Washington State — is that highways have actually been closed down entirely for an entire weekend. So we’ve worked hard to make sure that we can keep traffic moving, but unfortunately if this work is going to get done, and going to get done safely, then it means reducing the highway.”

The partial closures this weekend are nothing compared to what’s coming up next weekend. Most of Highway 1 will be down to a single lane in each direction, including traffic over the Port Mann Bridge.
