VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Coming up this Sunday is the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is a lunar harvest festival. The star of the show is the moon cake.
“I kind of think of them as Chinese Christmas cakes,” says Mijune Pak from Follow Me Foodie. “You give them as gifts to friends or family or really important clients.”
The moon cake is rich and dense with a thin pastry skin filled with sweetened lotus seed paste. In the centre is a salted duck egg yolk meant to represent the moon.
There are a few places around the Lower Mainland where you can get some.
“Saint Germain Bakery in Aberdeen Mall,” suggests Pak. “There’s also going to be tons of Mid-Autumn Festival activities like dancing and activities for kids and a how bunch of other traditional foods.”
You can also try moon cakes with more local ingredients at Fairmont Vancouver and Pan Pacific hotels. T&T Supermarket has moon cakes that are filled with ice cream!
