ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – A public hearing has been called to determine whether a police officer from Abbotsford who pleaded guilty to assault can keep his job.

In 2009, Cst. Adam Page was accused of shoving a shoplifter into a wall so hard that the man’s head dented a wall.

Page was given a conditional sentence and a year’s probation earlier this year, meaning the incident won’t show up on his criminal record if he behaves himself.

Police also did an internal investigation which found Page abused his authority, but cleared him on claims that he acted deceitfully.

“After reviewing the matter, the Police Complaints Commissioner felt that the discipline authority was incorrect and felt it was in the public interest to order a public hearing into the matter,” says Deputy Police Complaint Commissioner Rollie Woods.  “It is very similar to a trial where evidence is led, a retired judge is appointed as an adjudicator, and at the end of the day the adjudicator will determine whether there will be any discipline.”

Discipline can range from management advice to dismissal.

No date has been set for the hearing.
