Lane closures at the Cape Horn

By

COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – It is another weekend of lane closures on Highway 1 through the Cape Horn Interchange.

The highway at the Cape Horn is down to one lane each way.

The lane closures are expected to last until Sunday afternoon, but Greg Johnson with the Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project points out it is a big job. They’re demolishing what’s left of the old overpass.

“Last weekend, drivers were very accommodating; they stayed away,” explains Johnson. “They allowed our crews to finish up work a little bit early, so they got a head-start on this weekend’s work.”

“We’re hoping that if drivers are able to stay away from the Port Mann Bridge and the Cape Horn Interchange [again] and find alternate routes and other ways to cross the Fraser River, we’re hoping crews will be able to finish up a little ahead of schedule,” he adds.

Johnson says this is the final big hurdle as they race to open the new bridge in December.

“This interchange is one of the largest interchanges and busiest interchanges anywhere in British Columbia. More than 120,000 vehicles use it everyday, that’s why it’s such a critical part of creating the travel time savings on the Port Mann Bridge and Highway 1,” he believes.

“The new Port Mann Bridge — a 10 lane bridge — won’t give you any benefit unless you have the new Cape Horn Interchange at the north end. So we’re really removing the bottleneck from Highway 1.”

Work at Cape Horn Interchange almost finished

After four years of construction involving hundreds of workers and the building of 15 new on and off-ramps, soon you’ll be moving through the area much faster.

“At the Cape Horn Interchange in the area adjacent to the bridge… these are the final major changes and we’re not expecting any other weekend delays that are required after this work is completed,” explains Max Logan with the project.

“There will continue to be night time work,” he reminds us.

Logan adds work on the south side of the Fraser River is largely complete.
