COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – Highway One is open to all lanes as crews finished construction at the Cape Horn Interchange earlier than expected.

Max Logan with the Highway One Port Mann Improvement Project says despite the quick work, there is still a lot of work to be done.

“Most of that work is going to be taking place overnight. We make a point of not doing any work during the day,” explains Logan. “The last two weekends have been unusual because we’ve had to do work during the weekends. But it should be smooth sailing now on the weekends, but more work coming overnight.”

Work on the Cape Horn is the most comprehensive interchange work in BC history.

“The new Cape Horn Interchange when it’s complete is going to go from one overpass with four on and off ramps to a total of 15 new overpasses and direct connections,” Logan says. “So that’s going to take you to-and-from the highway to all the major arterial routes like Lougheed Highway, United Blvd, Mary Hill bypass.”

He adds some of the 15 overpasses are already open, with the remainder opening in 2013.

“So although the new bridge opens in December, there is ongoing construction work particularly in Cape Horn through 2013 and also to complete the final two lanes of the new bridge, because of course when it’s complete, it will be 10 lanes wide.”
