VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – They climbed 20,000 feet to the top of Africa’s tallest mountain and helped to raise $310,000 for the Alzheimer Society of BC. But in this News1130 follow-up story, what makes this Vancouver couple unique is that they are in their mid-80′s and may have broken a Guinness World Record.

Esther and Martin Kafer are still in Africa waiting to find out if they have in fact earned a place in history by climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The Society’s CEO Jean Blake says the cause is pretty close to home for the pair as Martin’s sister suffers from the disease.

“It really symbolizes as they go up that incline, the difficult journey that people with Alzheimer’s face and their caregivers every day. So they wanted to do that in honour of her,” notes Blake.

The climb coincided with the Mt. Kilimanjaro Grouse Grind for Alzheimer’s. “We had local hikers fundraising in support and raised over another $100,000.”
