VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Firefighters are on standby this long weekend in case your Thanksgiving dinner goes up in flames.

It happens a lot more often than you’d think says fire dispatcher Cory Kelso.

“Not only turkey fires, but fires in stoves in general. You’d be surprised how many people leave their stove on, or their pot on their stove and walk away from their house!”

The result is sometimes devastating if crews aren’t able to save your home. He says there is one big thing to remember before your Thanksgiving prep begins.

“Clean out your oven before you put a giant bird with butter or wine or anything else flammable inside your oven.”

Fire prevention week kicks off this Sunday.
