KAMLOOPS (NEWS1130) – Two men are dead after a head-on collision on Highway 5A in between Kamloops and Merritt.

Barb McLintock with the BC Coroners Service says the crash resulted in a grass fire that grew to ten hectares in size, which slowed investigators down.

“We have confirmed that two people died in this crash. They found a second person this morning. We believe they were the drivers of the two trucks involved,” she explains.

“What happened… was the two semis, one carrying concrete and one hauling lumber, crashed more or less head-on on Highway 5A near the Stump Lake Turnoff, near Stump Lake Ranch,” she adds.

McLintock can’t tell us the victims’ names, nor where the men are from.

RCMP traffic analysts are looking into exactly how the crash happened.

Operation Impact

Meanwhile, police in Vancouver are launching “Operation Impact” to remind you to slow down and pay attention when you’re behind the wheel.

Constable Brian Montague says officers will be out in force this long weekend. “We’re going to be at key locations throughout Vancouver.”

“We’re targeting unsafe driving behaviour: speeding, disobeying lights, distracted driving, not wearing your seatbelt… any of the behaviours that we consider to be dangerous,” he explains.

“Our goal this year is to raise public awareness about the dangers… [of] engaging in risky or illegal driving behaviours. [It's the ] main cause of death and injury on our roadways,” adds Montague.

He expects a busy weekend on the roads, as many people will be visiting friends and family for Thanksgiving.
