VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There is now one reported case of E. coli in BC. However, there’s no word yet whether it is linked to the recalled beef products from the XL Foods plant in Alberta.
“What we’re investigating right now is whether it is linked to the XL situation,” says Suzanne Germain with the Vancouver Island Health Authority.
She says they can’t release the patient’s location, nor their condition or what products have been consumed.
Dozens more products have been added to the list of recalled items, which contains hundreds of products and stores across Canada and the United States.
The latest list of recalled items can be found here, while information on the investigation and steps being taken can be found here.
The Alberta government has confirmed that five people have fallen ill after consuming products linked to the plant; officials in Newfoundland are probing whether a sixth case is also linked to XL.
Tests are currently being done to find the source of E. coli in four other cases in Alberta, 13 in Saskatchewan, and one in British Columbia.
Harpreet Kochhar with the Public Health Agency of Canada says XL Foods had a plan in place to battle E. coli, but didn’t follow or update that plan.
Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, meanwhile, was under fire the House of Commons again yesterday, with the NDP demanding he apologize to Canadians and resign. Ritz repeated that food safety remains a priority for the Harper government.
The minister has said the XL plant will not be allowed to reopen until investigators are satisfied it is safe.
