MISSISSAUGA, ON (NEWS1130) – It’s Thanksgiving, which means the Butterball turkey talk-line is open for all your tough bird questions.

There is no turkey emergency too big or too small for the turkey experts at Butterball, who say they have heard just about everything.

“This one guy thought he would hide the ring in the stuffing. We really encouraged him not to do it that way, so I think he ended up tying it to the drumstick,” notes Mary Clingman with Butterball, and surprisingly that isn’t the strangest question she’s ever heard.

Mary says one lady buried her turkey in the snow and then couldn’t find, something that Mary can’t exactly help you with.

“A lot of are calls are on how long it takes to thaw the turkey and people who store the turkey for a year and are checking to see if it’s safe to use,” Mary adds. “You can’t tell by looking at it or smelling it. You want to know what temperature it’s at because a turkey does not have to be over-cooked at all. You just want to cook it to the proper temperature and get it out of the oven.”

Butterball experts recommend cold-water thawing time to be 30 minutes for each pound for a full turkey. Make sure to not thaw the turkey at room temperature as that could promote bacterial growth.
