SURREY (NEWS1130) – The driver involved in a hit and run in Surrey that sent an 11-year-old boy to hospital yesterday has turned himself in.

RCMP have seized the 19-year-old’s vehicle for forensic inspection. It’s unclear whether charges will be laid.

“We are pleased to report that the driver did the right thing by coming forward and turning himself in, and we are extremely happy that the child involved in this accident is expected to make a speedy recovery,” says Corporal Bert Paquet.

A boy stepped off a school bus, which had its lights flashing, on 82nd Avenue near 184th Street yesterday afternoon. The boy was hit by a dark-coloured, older Honda. He is expected to be released from hospital today.

“The 11-year-old boy is expected to be released from the hospital today with no significant injuries, and expected to make a full recovery.”

Surrey RCMP are still looking for more information about the case; if you can help them, you’re asked to call them at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS

Parents rattled by hit and run

News1130 hit the streets this morning, asking parents what they think about this incident. Many tells us they’re disgusted a person could hit a child — or anybody, for that matter — and not stop.

One woman often sees drivers disobeying the 30 km/h signs, which she thinks only leads to accidents. “I’ve noticed there are fewer crossing guards in areas and that’s a concern because these children just get out and they walk.”

Others believe the government needs to step in to better educate drivers.

“The responsibility comes on the teachers and on the school. As well that, they shouldn’t let any kids go out on the street without supervision,” argues one man we met.

Another parent, who volunteers as a cross guard in Vancouver, says drivers are getting worse and the dark weather isn’t helping. “Some people don’t care. Sometimes I’ll even put [up the] stop sign and they just shake their head. They don’t understand that the area is a school zone.”
