VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s almost Halloween, and that used to mean people trying to smuggle fireworks into Canada from the US. But it seems to be a dying trend.

Border guard Tania Royer is always on the lookout for fireworks, especially this time of year, but “so far this year, the CBSA has stopped illegal fireworks from entering the country on eight different occasions.”

Royer says in 2010, that number was 51 and numbers have been steadily dropping since 2009. She notes there is a way to legally bring fireworks into the country.

“Basically, travellers wishing to bring fireworks back into Canada… must have a permit to import the fireworks and they must declare them to the Border Services officer upon their entry into Canada,” she explains.

She adds guards also keep an eye out around Canada Day.
