VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Whitecaps FC have become the first Canadian team to make the MLS playoffs as the Seattle Sounders edged FC Dallas at home 3-1, to lock down a playoff spot for Vancouver. Earlier, the ‘Caps lost to the Portland Timbers 1-0 at BC Place.

Jack Jewsbury‘s blast from 25 yards out in the first half gave Portland the shutout win in front of 21,000 fans.

In the 39th minute, the Timbers’ midfielder rocketed a shot to the top right corner past Vancouver goalkeeper Brad Knighton.

Portland limited the Vancouver offensive chances in the game, as the ‘Caps brought on offensive players Dane Richards, Darren Mattocks and Omar Salgado to try and score the equalizer in the second half.

The ‘Caps had a couple of quality chances early in the game. Camilo missed a header five minutes in and nine minutes later Portland defender Steven Smith almost put a low volley past his ‘keeper Donovan Ricketts, who made a foot save.

The win gives Portland the Cascadia Cup title. Seattle would have taken the trophy — which goes to the best team between the Timbers, Whitecaps and Sounders — had Vancouver beaten Portland.
