VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – If you want to know how much your MLA is spending, you might not be satisfied with what you’re about to get.
MLAs are getting ready to post a fresh batch of expense information online, following public pressure and criticism from the province’s Auditor General.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation‘s Jordan Bateman is taking the provincial politicians to task for not disclosing enough information. He says one crucial piece of information will be missing — actual receipts.
“These MLAs have now flip-flopped or basically just flat out broken their word, and they are going to post lump sums instead,” he explains.
The BC government is expected to post some information online by the end of the month, but Bateman says without receipts, there will be no context.
“What it does, is it puts a little bit of fear into these guys to make sure they are not out there spending our money on $16 orange juice or castle moats like we saw in Britain,” he adds.
Bateman says the BC Liberals and New Democrats are “failing the transparency test.”
