OTTAWA, ON (NEWS1130) – The Brooks, Alberta meat-packing plant at the centre of a massive recall of tainted beef is back in business.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says it has lifted its suspension of the operating licence for the XL Foods plant.

The agency says the plant will be allowed to “progressively resume” slaughter and meat-processing operations. It says those operations will proceed under enhanced surveillance by food-safety officials and increased testing protocols.

The agency says additional inspectors will stay at the plant to monitor procedures and ensure strengthened food safety controls are being integrated into daily plant practices.

Meanwhile, a new poll has found the E. coli scare hasn’t changed what we put on the table every night.

The Ipsos Reid poll — done for Postmedia News and Global Television — finds most of us have no plans to cut back on our beef consumption and we still trust the safety of our food.

Across the country, 16 people got sick from the tainted beef.
