DELTA (NEWS1130) – Float home owners and marinas on the Fraser River in Delta are in shock after being handed massive lease increases by Port Metro Vancouver.
Area MLA Vicki Huntington is hoping to fight this. “They treat their tenants like they’re dirt; they can’t do that.”
Huntington says the port is demanding rate increases of 79 per cent or more, a boost in marine insurance and full marine survey requirements for float home owners who already have occupancy permits. “They have to develop an attitude that understands where, especially residential owners, small marinas, and small commercial users are coming from.”
In some cases, Port Metro Vancouver is demanding lease increases of more than 93 per cent within a three year period.
“On top of that, they have required a list of additional insurance requirements that are absolutely unheard of for floating homes,” says Huntington.
She claims some strata councils and a yacht club felt so intimidated, they signed their leases under duress. She was encouraged a port rep attended a packed emergency meeting about the lease situation last night.
