VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A number of police cars surrounded a McDonald’s restaurant at Cassiar Street and East Hastings Street around 8:15 p.m. Monday night.

One man was taken to hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

The Independent Investigations Office — that started operating in September — has been called to investigate. It confirms the shooting involved a police officer.

VPD Sergeant Randy Fincham says they got a report about a man smashing windows.

“When the first officer arrived on scene he was confronted by a man with a knife. The officer subsequently shot the man,” explains Fincham.

No names have been released.

Traffic in the area was redirected as police investigated.

Meanwhile, the IIO is also investigating a case in Langley after Mounties went after a pickup truck that wouldn’t stop at a roadside check.

Minutes later, the truck crashed into two other cars at 240th Street and 16th Avenue. The driver of one of those cars died at the scene.
