VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A plan to have most people using bikes, transit or their legs instead of cars has been passed by Vancouver city council.
The 2040 transportation decision was unanimous Wednesday morning.
The plan prioritizes rapid transit in five corridors, with Broadway being the key one. It aims to have zero traffic fatalities by 2040 and push people away from using their vehicles to get around.
Bob Paddon with TransLink says this plan is a good one.
“If you look at any of the major urban regions in the world today, they’re not looking at a future that has increasing reliance on the automobile,”says Paddon.
Council did acknowledge that they need to find a way to fund the Broadway project or else the plan wouldn’t work.
Paddon adds there will be public consultation throughout the process. Yesterday, a public hearing brought mixed reviews.
“Ultimately these plans are the public’s plans, but this really embraces how we want to travel in this region,” believes Paddon.
It also encourages more residential areas near transit and looks to find more green space.
