Telephone scam specifically targets the Lower Mainland

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A telephone scam News1130 first told you about has a very local flavour.

The automated dialler calls you pretending to be from WestJet, and eventually transfers you to a “closer” who tries to get you to part with your credit card info.

WestJet’s Robert Palmer says it’s an age-old scam with a very local twist.

“We know that the scammers are targeting the 604 area code at the moment. It’s quite possible that listeners of News1130 are definitely going to get one of these calls at some point if they haven’t received one already,” notes Palmer.

He stresses his airline has nothing to do with this scam.

“It does seem that they go from region to region, province to province. Now obviously they are con-artists, and if they don’t get any fish or if no one falls for this, then they go back underground and switch to another area code.”

Palmer adds they still don’t know where exactly the calls are coming from, but hopes no one gives their personal info out to a stranger that calls out of the blue. He also urges you to hang up the phone immediately.
