More police and cameras needed on the SkyTrain line: expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – What is needed to keep transit safe after four security incidents on the SkyTrain line?

SFU Professor Andre Gerolymatos says more police patrols and extra cameras along the lines should be put in place, but he believes riders also have to do their part.

“One simple thing for people who ride the train [is] keep their eyes open. There’s nothing like the vigilant citizen being careful and spotting something,” Gerolymatos notes. “We all carry cell phones — well at least most of us do. There’s a transit security depot nearby and if you see something, let the authorities know. Don’t be shy.”

Cities like New York and London added police officers and inspections throughout their systems after similar security breaches.

If the goal is to make riders feel safe, Gerolymatos says spending more taxpayers’ dollars on cameras and extra patrols is well worth it.

“The more security, the more safe people feel, but it is an economic balance at the end of the day.”

Later this afternoon, Transit Police will have an update on the investigation into the explosive device found on the Expo Line in Surrey on Friday. Yesterday, Transit Police said they had no suspects and hadn’t made any arrests.
