Free trips in Port Mann promotion expire in May

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – The 20 free trips being offered for the new Port Mann Bridge carry some restrictions, including an expiry date.

If you register your vehicle by the end of the month, you can save the $1.50 toll on 20 trips. But if you don’t use up the free trips by the end of May, you’re out of luck.

TreO is the agency that is managing the tolling. The expiry date is posted on TReO’s website. But NDP Transportation Critic Harry Bains says the expiry hasn’t been made clear, noting it has been left out of news releases, public announcements, and advertising.

“When you’re giving 50 per cent reduction in tolls for a year, then these 20 trips should also coincide with that period. So, it’s not fair, what they’re doing,” he insists, adding he feels the whole tolling process has become confusing.

“This promotion is targeted at frequent drivers, and we expect a majority of users to use these 20 free crossings well before the six months is up,” says Greg Johnson with the project.

“The Port Mann Bridge and the Highway 1 Improvement Project are being paid for by tolls. Extending this promotion indefinitely could have an impact on… other promotions, such as the $1.50 introductory rate,” he adds.

He notes the free-tolls promotion is designed to encourage drivers to sign up for a registered account and a tolling decal.

The promotion also requires you provide banking information or a credit card to qualify and is not applicable to “large-sized vehicles.”

The first week on the new Port Mann Bridge is free in December; after that, it will cost you $1.50 each way.
