NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS1130) – Yet another scare at a Skytrain station, this time in New Westminster.

New Westminster Station was closed for about 30 minutes last night after a passenger found a pipe, wrapped in black tape and turned it over to security.

Anne Drennan with the Transit Police says they acted pretty quickly once they got a good look at it.

“They could see something white that appeared to be in one end of the pipe and they decided that it was suspicious enough that they should call in the explosive device unit,” Drennan explains.

After the bomb squad used a robot to dispose of the pipe safely, it was determined that it was not any kind of explosive, but simply a regular piece of pipe with a wooden dowel in it.

Security has been tighter on the SkyTrain since someone tossed a crude explosive device on the tracks on Friday, leading to a few other scares in the days following.

No suspects have been identified yet.
