VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Many American ex-pats got together last night in Vancouver to watch Obama’s win, including hundreds of members of the group Democrats Abroad, who celebrated at a busy downtown bar.
As results began to point to an Obama win, Joseph — a former Republican who voted Democrat for the first time — expressed optimism.
“It’s about how America projects itself to the world. Republicans have done an awful job and they’ve been a terrible minority power. They’ve been frustrating everything the President wants to do,” he says, adding it was his move to Canada that changed his political views.
“Just the way he looks at the world, it seems to be much more broad, not so closed-minded like it has been in the past,” adds Sarah, another member of the group.
A woman named Boo felt it was one of the most important elections in US history. “Democrats Abroad around the world got out to support Obama and make sure the travesty of Mitt Romney being elected [didn't happen]. It’s very important,” she asserts.
Ex-pat David Katz feels the US is due for a comeback under Obama.
“We are basically back even with where things were just when Obama took the presidency after the massive collapse [in 2008]. I really think the next four years will be where the US reclaims its role in the world,” he says.
Democrats Abroad represents Americans living in more than 160 countries around the world.
