VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The union representing support staff at Simon Fraser University and Vancouver Community College are trying to keep the pressure on.

Strike action by support workers from CUPE Local 3338 have begun at all three Simon Fraser University locations: Burnaby Mountain, Central City in Surrey, and Harbour Centre in downtown Vancouver.

Local president Lynne Fowler says students will notice some changes. “The buses are not going to the same places that they were, we’re picketing key entry points to the university. A lot of the classes have been cancelled. It depends on the individual faculty members.”

“We were in mediation all weekend and we didn’t get a settlement by the end of the weekend. We’re hoping to get back into mediation, so this is to escalate the pressure on the university to come back and settle an agreement with us,” she explains.

Vancouver Community College has also closed down both campuses today.
