VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There’s plenty in store for the local sports fan this weekend.

WHL

The Vancouver Giants (5-12-0-0) are back home to host the Portland Winterhawks (13-3-1-0) tonight at the Coliseum (7:30 p.m.). The Giants are just back from a five-game eastern road trip that saw Vancouver post a 2-3 record, ending with a 9-1 loss at the Tri-City Americans on Sunday

The Giants currently sit in 10th place in the Western Conference while the Winterhawks lead the U.S. Divison and have scored 49 goals in their last nine games.

It’s the first meeting of the season between the Winterhawks and Giants.  The Giants won three of four meetings last season.

AHL

It will be a sold-out Abbotsford Sports and Entertainment Centre tonight and tomorrow when the Abbotsford Heat skate against the Edmonton Oilers’ Oklahoma City farm team.

The visit by the Barons means a chance for fans to see young Oilers’ prospects like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Taylor Hall who are playing in the American Hockey League during the current NHL lockout.

“It’s always nice to play in front of my family and friends,” says Nugent-Hopkins, a native of Burnaby, who is expecting several relatives and friends to be at the rink tonight.

Busloads of Edmonton Oiler fans are also expected to make the trip from Alberta for the series which is a complete sell-out.

Through the first four weeks of the AHL season the Heat have the top winning percentage in the Western Conference with a record of (6-1-0-2). The Barons sit three points behind the Heat at (5-4-0-1).

BCHL

The Friday night BC Hockey League action includes the Chilliwack Chiefs visiting the Coquitlam Express. Faceoff is 7 p.m.

CFL

The BC Lions finished their bye-week with a BC Place practice today, and will find out Sunday which opponent they face in next Sunday’s CFL West Division Final when the Calgary Stampeders play host to Saskatchewan (1:30 p.m.)

The Lions are planning to take the weekend off and meet as a team to watch the Stampeders play the Roughriders.

The break has helped a few Lions get healthy. Receivers Arland Bruce (concussion) and Geroy Simon (hamstring) have practiced this week and will play on November 18th. Offensive lineman Dean Valli (knee) is also cleared to play but won’t return to practice until after the weekend.

College Football

The Simon Fraser University Clansmen play their final game of the GNAC football season with a trip to Azusa, California Saturday to face Azusa Pacific (6 p.m.). SFU players Bo Palmer of Vancouver and Surrey’s Adam Berger have been named to the 38 man Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-academic team.

Junior Football

The Canadian Junior Football League will crown a champion Saturday at Langley’s McLeod Athletic Park.  The Langley Rams host the Prairie Football Conference champion Saskatoon Hilltops in the 2012 Canadian Bowl.  Kickoff is 1 p.m.
