VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A call to Vancouver police about a man threatening to hurt himself has ended in his death.

Over the course of the incident, the man suffered self-inflicted injuries and was also tasered. In the aftermath, police tape has gone up around the front lawn of a modest white house on Renfew Street near Charles Street.

BC’s police watchdog is now involved. Owen Court of the Independent Investigation Office says it started with a call about a distraught man.

“It’s my understanding that the fellow was in possession of an edged weapon, some type of knife. We were advised that a conducted energy weapon was deployed in him. He was taken to hospital and subsequently pronounced deceased,” he tells us.

As well as being tasered, the man suffered what are described as self-inflicted injuries.

The scene has drawn the attention of neighbours, but those who saw something have declined to be interviewed. One man says the person who died had confided to him about being depressed.

The man’s name has not been released.
