VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – With so many road projects on the go, some construction groups are now lobbying the province to help them make things a little easier.

The BC Roadbuilders Association that says there are some groups — including themselves — that suggest closing a road altogether when doing construction as opposed to keeping one lane open each way to get drivers through.

Jack Davidson with the BCRA explains a detour would be in place, but they’re also suggesting a full closure for safety reasons.

“We’ve had flaggers injured. We’ve had people running into construction sites, so to protect our workers, we’d like to see, where possible, lanes closed,” Davidson notes. “Our members are asking the province to close roads completely where there is an alternate or where the capacity of what’s left allows for the good movement of traffic.”

Another suggestion from Davidson is if there is road work on the highway, they can also shift all the traffic into two lanes, closing the other direction completely.

News1130 has placed calls to the Ministry of Transportation and we’re waiting to hear back.
