SURREY (NEWS1130) – Flags are flying at half-staff at RCMP detachments across Canada as Mounties in Surrey try to deal with the death of a young officer in a bad crash yesterday.
Mike Webster is a police psychologist who says officers deal with the loss of a colleague in much the same way as the rest of us do.
Webster has been involved with police training and says officers are not taught to deal with the loss of their own “do they experience some sort sadness because they’ve lost a brother? Yes they would. Police people, on a whole, like other human beings are very resilient and they have the ability to bounce back.”
Webster says when there is a loss, we find it easier to empathize with the joy and suffering of those similar to us “that’s what you see when you see the loss of a police person when they have the funeral and police people come from around the nation and possibly even south of the border to attend.”
