More than 1,000 pairs of shoes to line Surrey Prov Court

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – One thousand and seventy-four pairs of shoes; they represent the number of people killed by impaired drivers in Canada last year.

The plan is to line them up outside Surrey Provincial Court this weekend to send a message about drinking and driving. A group called Families for Justice hopes this will make people think twice about drinking and getting behind the wheel as we lead up to Christmas.

Markita Kaulius, who lost her daughter Kassandra last year, says families who have lost a loved one will be standing with the shoes with a picture of them in hand.

“We’re asking the government to also change the Criminal Code of Canada and re-define the offence of impaired driving causing death to vehicular manslaughter. We have collected over 16,000 signatures,” she tells us.

The petition will also be at the courthouse this Saturday.

Kaulius notes four people are killed every day in this country due to impaired driving. “Every one of those shoes represents a life that should still be here because every one of their deaths was preventable.”
