ROCHESTER, NY (NEWS1130) – You knew them before they were famous: Raggedy Ann and Andy, Mr. Potato Head, GI Joe, etc.
The Toy Hall of Fame in Rochester, New York is full of generations of childhood favourites and today, two more classics were inducted for 2012.
Was it the Magic 8 Ball? ‘Outlook not so good.’
Star Wars action figures and Dominos beat out a field of nominees, including the tea set, little green army men, the board game Clue, Lite Brite, and Fisher-Price’s rolling Corn Popper.
The selection process is a long and serious matter involving hall curators, educators, historians, and a national selection committee.
One of the key criteria is longevity; each toy must be widely recognized; foster learning, creativity or discovery through play; and be enduringly popular over generations.
To date, 49 toys have been inducted in the Hall of Fame, including Play-Doh, Lego, Etch A Sketch, Monopoly, and the Atari 2600 Game System… along with universal favourites: the stick and cardboard box.
