VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Metro Vancouver sees a lot of cash in our water supply.
A regional district report finds there could be millions to be made by using watersheds to produce power.
The Capilano reservoir alone could mean six to 10 million dollars each year. Metro Vancouver is looking at a plan to create hydroelectric power in both the Capilano and Seymour reservoirs.
North Vancouver City Mayor Darrell Mussato says it can be done without affecting water quality. “We found that there’s an ability to generate power from the water that spilled from the capilano and the seymour when there is no other use for it.”
The regional district has spent the past couple of years looking into the idea and Mussato says the people involved in consultations like what they see. “They see that there is really a tremendous amount of benefit and very little negative side.”
If approval is given later this month, Metro Vancouver would then seek the province’s permission.
