Old Port Mann Bridge closes

SURREY (NEWS1130) – It’s the final day for a crucial link in the Lower Mainland. Today is your last chance to drive over the old Port Mann Bridge.

The big orange span opened in June of 1964, opening up development and creating new communities on both sides of the Fraser River. It will be gone before it turns 50 and if you look at pictures of the area now compared to opening day back then — you’d be amazed at the difference.

“Today is the last day to drive over the old Port Mann Bridge so if you are sentimental and you want to say goodbye, make sure you make the trip,” says Max Logan with the Port Mann Highway One Project. “Of course you’ll be driving by it as we dismantle it but after today [traffic] will be on the new bridge.”

Logan says stormy weather expected this weekend means they’ve had to fast-track the old bridge’s closure and move traffic on to the new span.  Drivers will only have two lanes westbound until the official opening Dec. 1st when four lanes open each way.
