NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS1130) – The man who was shot by police outside the Starlight Casino in New Westminster earlier this month has died in hospital.

“Unfortunately we were informed that the gentleman passed away last night around 8 o’clock, in hospital,” says Owen Court with the Independent Investigation Office.  The agency took control of the investigation almost immediately after the shooting, when it was determined that the man had been shot by police.

The IIO is not releasing any details at this time about the circumstances that lead to the shooting.  “At this point, no, that’s still under investigation,” says Court.  “The scope of our investigation essentially remains unchanged, obviously the outcome has taken an unfortunate turn here.”

The man’s family has been informed of the death, but his name has not been released.

Police were called to the casino parking lot just before 6 a.m. on November 8th to deal with a man with a gun. Shots rang out five hours later.
