LANGLEY (NEWS1130) – Thousands of people are in Langley today to remember the life of a young Surrey RCMP officer.
Constable Adrian Oliver, 28, was killed when a semi collided with his unmarked police cruiser at 64th Avenue and 148th Street in Surrey last week.
An RCMP pipe band led a march to the Langley Events Centre. Not far behind the pipe band was a hearse carrying the Oliver’s body.
“Any time we lose an officer, whether it’s with our police department or any other police service, it’s extremely difficult. Certainly, it’s a very solemn day for everyone in our organization and certainly for the family of Constable Oliver,” says Sergeant Peter Thiessen.
Thiessen says police officers, family and friends have come from all across North America, some coming from as far away as Australia.
Among those remembering Cst. Oliver, was his twin brother Ben, who says they have only ever been apart for a year, before now.
“Thank you for showing me how to live life to the fullest. Thank you for showing how to be a better brother, son, friend and person. I love you.”
One officer from Seattle says when one of their own passes away it’s felt all over the US.
“It means a lot for us to come up here and pay our respects.”
This woman is at the service because she just really admires the line of work Cst. Oliver was a part of.
“A very nice young man from right here, and I’m very sad his career was cut so short so soon. I don’t think they get the respect they deserve”
Hundreds of people have also contributed to the RCMP’s online condolence page for the Oliver family.
Oliver came from a family with strong ties to the RCMP. His dad is a senior Mountie in Ottawa and his brother is also a member of the force.
Oliver grew up in Ontario and was posted in Surrey in 2009. He was finishing a 12-hour shift the semi slammed into his car. No charges have been laid.
“The investigation is ongoing,” says Thiessen. “Today is a day to remember Constable Oliver.”
