LANGLEY (NEWS1130) – BC Housing has issued an extreme weather emergency in Langley, meaning more shelter beds will open tonight for the homeless.
Major James Haglund with Gateway Shelter says there are two conditions that prompt them to open more space. “So we have those two different criteria; one is tied directly with the temperature, and the other is the amount of days with solid rain.”
Up to 30 additional shelter beds will be made available, for one night only, because Langley has seen five consecutive days of rain.
“In which case, we open for one day to allow individuals to come in, dry out, wash their clothing, and be able to get additional clothing,” adds Haglund.
Weather emergencies are also declared when the temperature dips below minus two.
