NEW YORK, NY (NEWS1130) - The National Hockey League has rejected the latest contract proposal from the NHL Players Association.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said the two sides are “still far apart” following the NHLPA’s latest proposal, but hopes that negotiations can build momentum off today’s talks.
Bettman said the owners are “mystified” by the NHLPA’s actions and added that the league is losing between $18-million and $20-million each day during the lockout.
NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr said the players had “done everything they could to get the game back on the ice” after making a new proposal this morning, one that he hoped could lead to a new deal. Fehr also accused the league of being more concerned about the upcoming US Thanksgiving holiday than listening to their offer.
The NHLPA’s offer did move closer to the NHL’s last proposal. The players union proposed a 50-50 split of revenues during the five-year deal along with a reported $393-million in make whole payments. Two weeks ago, the league offered $211-million and a 50-50 split.
There are no talks scheduled but the two sides are expected to meet on Friday. Today was the 67th day of the lockout. More than a quarter of the regular season games have already been cancelled.
