BURNABY (NEWS1130) – A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection to the murder of a man whose badly burned body was found in Burnaby almost exactly a year ago.

He can’t be named because of his age but he has been charged with first-degree murder and being an accessory.

Back in March, two men were charged with second-degree murder but yesterday their charges were upgraded to first-degree murder and indignity to a dead human body.  Brandon Nandan and Shakib Shakib, who were both 19-years-old at the time of the murder, are awaiting trial.  Nandan is out on bail with a number of conditions, while Shakib remains in custody.

“I can’t elaborate too much [on why charges were upgraded].  Just because somebody is in custody does not mean our investigation stops.  So, depending on the evidence that we have and the evidence that we’re retrieving, those details can shift and change and in this case we’ve received enough information to move those charges to first-degree murder,” says Sgt. Jennifer Pound with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

Twenty-year-old Branson Sanders was killed in Surrey on December 2nd, 2011 but his body was found near Robert Burnaby Park following some sort of a fight at a house party.

All four men were acquaintances and knew each other from high school.
