TORONTO, ON (NEWS1130) – The day has finally arrived for the Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts, as the two teams will square off in the 100th edition of the Grey Cup this afternoon at the Rogers Centre.
The teams met twice this season with the Argos winning both games. Toronto earned a 39-36 victory at home in Week 2, and then came out on top 22-14 when the teams met in Calgary in Week 8.
The Argonauts are trying to win their first Grey Cup title since 2004, while the Stamps last claimed the trophy in 2008.
Toronto will be trying to follow in the footsteps of the BC Lions by winning the championship on home turf. The Argos last won the Grey Cup at home in 1952.
Ricky Ray will be making his fourth Grey Cup start at quarterback, but just his first with Toronto. Ray won championships with the Edmonton Eskimos in 2003 and 2005. Calgary quarterback Kevin Glenn will be making just his first Grey Cup appearance.
Toronto’s Scott Milanovich becomes the fifth rookie head coach in the past 20 years to take his team to the championship game. On the other side of the field will be Calgary’s John Hufnagel, who accomplished the same feat with the Stampeders in 2008.
The Stampeders enter the game on a streak that has seen them go 13-2 over their past 15 games after starting the season 3-4. They’ve also won their last three games on the road, including last week’s 34-29 victory over the BC Lions in the Western Final.
Running back Jon Cornish of the Stampeders led the CFL in rushing this season, but he struggled in two games against Toronto. Cornish was held to 39 yards on the ground in their first meeting and then ran for 43 yards in their second match-up.
Game time is 3 p.m.
