KELOWNA (NEWS1130) – Video evidence has been picked apart frame by frame in a Kelowna courtroom at the opening of the trial of an RCMP officer accused of kicking a suspect in the head while the man was on his hands and knees.
Cst. Geoff Mantler was charged with assault causing bodily harm after a reporter shot video of the incident involving the arrest of Buddy Tavares on a Kelowna street in January 2011.
The reporter, Kelly Hayes, was on the stand the entire day.
Under cross-examination by defence lawyer Neville McDougall, Hayes said Mantler did not seem angry at the time of the arrest and that he shouted at Tavares to get down on the ground at least five times.
Hayes also testified that Tavares appeared to raise his hands toward Mantler twice before he was kicked.
Mantler was suspended without pay following the incident.
